Movie of the day: Star 80
Today’s movie of the day is Star 80 (1983) directed by Bob Fosse.
This was Bob Fosse’s last movie he directed before he died in 1987. This movie is about Playboy model Dorothy Stratten. How she started her rise to fame, and was continuing to branch out her career as a movie star but her life was cut short. She was murdered by her husband Paul Snider at the age of 20.
This movie stars Mariel Hemingway as Dorothy Stratten and Eric Roberts as Paul Snider.
This movie talks about Stratten’s humble beginnings working at a Dairy Queen in Canada where she encounters Paul Snider who was a well known scammer and pimp but once he met Dorothy.
He absolutely falls in love with her and decided to devote all of this time, effort and money in making her a star.
He is able to convince her that they way to stardom is for her to become a playboy model and is able to conned her into taking nude photos of her then creating a portfolio and sending them off to Playboy. However she was about 17 years old at the time when these shots were taken so he was so hell bent in making her a star that he forged her mom’s signature (who is played by Carroll Baker).
Then by luck Dorothy is invited to fly out to California (at that point Paul Snider becomes her agent and husband) to get professional photography by Playboy and her career quickly escalates from there. Including being picked to by Playmate of the Month (August 1979) then she becomes 1980’s Playmate of the Year. With those titles she hear Hollywood calling and starts to get small film roles. However the luck of stardom is not the same for Paul Snider he goes onto these business ventures which ends up in failure and he feels dejected by Dorothy’s success.
Enrage by constant failure and jealous paranoia of Dorothy the final straw for him is when he finds out that she has been seeing someone else. He ends up killing her and then quickly killing himself.
This is one of my favorite movies because it is based on real life. I do not know how I found out about this movie but I tend to re watch it every couple of years. When I first saw it I did not know it was a movie directed by Bob Fosse. Because it didn’t feel like his usual musical or dancing type of film. This film like the real life it was based on was gritty, hard and absorbing!

The Scooby-Doo Project
(side note: So I tried to take a writing break but physically I cannot. So onward and upward and I will be posting those past selections soon!)
On October 31, 1999 the cartoon network aired a marathon of Scooby Doo. I remember watching this marathon but what caught my attention was the small segments that they would show between the cartoon and the commercial breaks. The segment was called The Scooby-Doo Project and it was supposed to be a light version of The Blair Witch Project starring the characters from Scooby-Doo.
The group decides to film their journey of going into Casper County woods in search of a monster and they end up disappearing there but their footage of what happened is found.
What is interesting about this short is that Shaggy points out that he has a been feeling about this particular mystery because the woods they are driving past look “more realistic” then the previous woods they have been to. They set this particular bunch of segment with real video of actual people and woods instead of the usual cartoon scenery but they kept the cartoon versions of the Scooby Doo gang.
Velma is very insistent of interviewing the locals of the county before driving into the woods and everyone that they interviewed has a different take of what the monster is suppose to be and she is baffled that no one story is consistent with another.
When they finally arrived to the woods at near dusk they leave the comfort of the mystery machine and decide to find the cemetery that is in the woods.
Of course Shaggy and Scooby are completely freaking out that they got to there woods late because it is almost night and they are complete not ok that Velma, Fred and Daphne decided to camp out in the cemetery!
The longer they are in the woods they more the gang starts to argue with each other and they are especially annoyed that Velma keeps filming them and that they only brought one tent for everyone to sleep in for the night. They are especially spooked by a monster they scared them by they cannot find the source of where the monster came from
Thinking that the would get a good night sleep during the time they are in the woods they encounter more problems like cramp spaces, there backpacks getting broken into and a shortage of supplies they needed for this trip.
During every other commercial break they to get more frustrated with each other and also the fact that they haven’t solved the mystery nor left the woods yet. But they keep hearing shrieking that sounds like it could be the monster and they also find food prints.
Nearing the end they come across an abandoned house and run inside. Velma is convinced that the shrieking is coming from the house and they find a radio instead and it starts playing a light beat song. However it is confirmed by Shaggy that whenever they heard music a monster is close to them and he is right!
Because the next thing you see is this:
And they start running up the stairs and you can see all of the characters running across the hallways to get away from the monster.
Then you seen Shaggy in the corner in the basement and Velma asks him what he is doing there and he is freaking out about how scared he is!
They finally were able to apprehend the monster and they remove the mask to reveal who was scaring them. It was:
“SOME GUY”
And they couldn’t figure out why he was scaring them and he said it because it’s Halloween and that’s what you do on Halloween! But then they asked why he scared them before Halloween at the cemetery and he said he wasn’t there but then…

I have been asked a lot lately what I am planning to read for the summer and of course being the avid reader I am happy to obliged the request! Here is some books and (links to buy) I am planning to read:
I am a huge fan of themes so these quick Fear Street Books by RL Stine are up my alley. As the founder of the Fear Street Book club and a RL Stine fan these books are a short treat for something light to read and scary.
Too many links for these books but I highly recommend checking Ebay!
Southern Lady Code: Short funny essays by Helen Ellis the mixes southern hospitality with a twist.

Mr Know-It- All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder by John Waters: I downloaded the audio version of this book because the author is the one who reads it. John Waters is so animated when he talks and he has such a unique spin on life. I am such a huge fan of his and anything he does.

Supermarket by Bobby Hall aka Logic- I saw this book at Barnes & Noble a couple of days ago and was caught off guard by it’s simple yet vibrant cover and then I read the back of the book and it was interesting for me to purchase.
Lords of Chaos: The bloody rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderland. This book focuses on the beginning stages of the Norwegian black metal scene and the correlation of a bunch of church fires and deaths that happened in 1993.

The Life and Times of Ward Kimball: Maverick of Disney Animation by Todd James Pierce. One of Walt Disney’s closest friends and animators and he worked on countless memorable Disney characters such as the Mad Hatter, Mickey mouse and Donald duck.

Hello and welcome to this week’s installment of Welcome to the Insta-hood! Where I interview fascinating people and there IG accounts. This time it is @hypepriestess turn!
- Tell me a little bit about yourself.
“I’m a Leo, I don’t think I know how to tell “a little” about myself, haha. But here goes; My name is Lacey, I’m 31, and I live one mile from Disneyland in Anaheim CA, and I’m kinda obsessed with Disney. I worked for Zumiez for 15 years, and quit last year at the District Manager level to open up my Tarot Lounge and Healing Studio in Downtown Santa Ana. I am currently a certified level II Reiki Practitioner, Channeled Healer, and intuitive tarot reader. I have been doing this work for about 5 years since my spiritual awakening in 2014.
I live in Orange County California with my boyfriend who anonymously runs the lifestyle and streetwear brand SLUSHCULT. We live with our two black cats, Phineas and Ferb, and we seriously just love to have FUN. I was born and raised in the Pacific North West, so I have lots of love for the west coast, but Southern California has truly become my home these past 13 years.
In my practice, it is extremely important for me to be inclusive and accessible. My prices are fair (for where I live) and I also offer payment plans. I try to accommodate for BI-POC, gender non-conformists, and marginalized peoples as much as possible in my space.”
2. When and why did you decide to start your business?
“I took the original leap in 2016, and had a “side hustle,” as our generation is so apt to do. Having started the instagram in 2015, I had a little bit of a following, and had consistent orders of crystals and tarot readings for the first year. In 2017, however, I got promoted to District Manager at Zumiez, like I had mentioned, and that job became way too full time for me to really accomplish what I wanted with my personal business. In 2018 I shut down tarot readings for essentially the entire year, even after I quit my job in September.
In August 2018, I had someone reach out to me and ask if she could come to my home to get a reading. She was visiting from Michigan and wanted to get read from me in person. I wasn’t comfortable with someone coming to my house, and I felt so embarrassed I didn’t have a space to share my healings in. So I purchased a little office space in Santa Ana and my intention was that on my two days off from Zumiez I would work out of my office on tarot readings. One week later, I quit Zumiez for good. “
3. How did you know that you had this gift?
“I think I’m still discovering my “gifts,” everyday. I think everyone has these gifts, and it’s either with you your entire life, or it can be developed over time. For me, occult, paranormal, spirits, aliens, etc were always a huge part of my life ALWAYS. I can remember setting up massive ghost hunting outings growing up in the pacific north west. Legit, I was 16, and getting 20+ people to go ghost hunting with me. I was always the one in high school seeking out THE TRUTH, and uncovering conspiracy theories. I was always curious.
I never felt “connected” in a spiritual sense (or I guess in a “religious” sense – I didn’t realize how much trauma I had around the word GOD), but I was always attracted to that life style.
When I was 25, had the best job, best home, best boyfriend, and best life – I went into massive depression for the first time in my life, and as it is for most people, that was my awakening moment. I was never the same. I used crystals to heal myself of depression. I used meditation to ease my pain, and start to uncover what the fuck was wrong with me. And that’s when tarot came in.
An ex best friend at the time (now best friends again, hah!) came out of the wood work and said Tarot really helped her with depression, and she said she thought it would be good for me. So I went down to my local metaphysical shop the next day and bought my first tarot deck for myself. That was it. I was sold. I couldn’t believe that every fuckin card I pulled resonated with my immediate situation. And a lot of people can’t read for themselves, but I could instantly. And I was almost immediately offering free readings on instagram back in 2015. I had no idea what I was doing, but I know that I read for hundreds of people, and only 1 person ever told me I was “wrong” or it didn’t “resonate.” (Back then, when I didn’t understand the way this works, that was a big deal to me.) Now I know that that person who said I was “wrong” just wasn’t willing to take ownership or responsibility for their role in the part they played in what they were asking about. And that is truly how I read intuitively. I let the cards explain a story and tell me the patterns, and cycles that people karmically hold in their energetic bodies. I don’t just read the cards, I read between the lines and try to identify root causes.
In 2018, I took an advanced energy healing class and really opened myself up to receive messages, and I became a channeled healer. I get messages, either written, spoken, or via energy work, during healing sessions. I am able to show people who their guides are, tell them info on past lives, activate their DNA, give them cosmic downloads to expand their awareness and consciousness, insert sacred geometry into them; I channel angels, guides, spirit, source. I can see peoples “power” animals, auras, and detect cords (attachments, or people/situations holding on to them that no longer serve them). I work with the ascended masters and their cosmic rays of light, as well as their flames, which are essentially high vibrational “energy” that clears and releases people of burdens, addictions, sorrows, and those destructive patterns and cycles I talked about before.
It’s a lot, but it has all opened and unlocked in the past 9 months. That creative “birthing” process has been very real to me.
I know it all sounds fucking crazy if you’re not used to this “realm.” But, 9 months ago, if you would have asked me if I could do any of this, or if I would WANT to do any of this, I would have said hell no. A lot can change when you’re open to receiving your gifts. And I think part of my story is showing that any “normal” person can do this work. I’m just a crazy chick who wears rainbows and glitter every day, loves Disneyland and having fun, and yet, here I am, standing in front of the world to present my gifts to HELP.”
4. What is the most common subject people contact you about and why?
“I think Energy Healings are what people pay for the most, but I think what they’re really after is someone to just listen to them. Someone to share their story with and know that the person is not judging them. And that is why I am shifting my practice soon from just tarot readings and energy healings to intuitive coaching sessions. I end up doing all those things any way in a session (if you order a tarot reading, I’m still going to read your energetic body; and vice versa). And I think what people really want is just some help in identifying root causes, taking accountability, and TANGIBLE NEXT STEPS, such as a PLAN of action they’re going to take in between sessions, and in that way they have some things to physically work on, instead of just receiving information and messages and walking away.
I think I’m really great at holding space for people and letting them explore their traumas, their ascension, their awakening. I hold big space for that and I LOVE to help people who are just stepping out onto their path in the spiritual world.”
5. Is there any exciting event or things coming up that you would like to share?
“Oh my god, is there ever. Since stepping into my power recently, so many doors and opportunities have opened for me!
My biggest thing is the opening of my physical business in downtown Santa Ana CA. Book a session with me and you can come in physically, or we can do distance work if you don’t live in the area! (That’s the great thing about energy work, you don’t need to be near me to have the benefits!) It’s fun when you visit locally though because I do sell crystals and other metaphysical goods (which you can also purchase from my website at hypepriestess.com) and you get to experience the powerful healing portal in the backroom which is all rainbows, protection, and fun. You still get the benefits from a distance session, but there’s nothing like being in the space, I swear.
Next, I have just gotten approved and announced a monthly WITCH WALK in Santa Ana which is basically an art walk, but for witches, healers, and occultists. It’s the third Saturday of every month in Santa Ana on 2nd and Broadway from 5pm-10pm. The first one will be June 15th, 2019.
I also hold a community event twice monthly with my good friend Maria called SACRED SPACE. We host it in my space, and it is an entirely intuitively and channeled lead class. We currently have two set times a month, but we have to add more classes because they’re always sold out. “

Today I interviewed a really funny and great podcast called: Florida Men on Florida Man. (Their IG name is @fmofpodcast ) They are three guys from Florida (obiviously!)
- Tell me a little about yourself:”
Cameron:”Florida born and raised musician and teacher who enjoys a good Florida Man story. I like to spend time with family, friends, and get outdoors when it’s not too unbearably hot. “
Wayne: “Born and raised in Florida. Toured the country, got married, had kids, and started a podcast with my best friends. I love soccer, talking about movies, and whiskey.”
Josh:” (I feel like I would be more honest if I answered these in 3rd person.) Josh has been described as pheromone heavy, illiterate, and situationally awkward. He talks when it’s too quiet and his brow will produce a sweet, glazed glossing that would rival a recently detailed car. He enjoys the company of his co-hosts but feels overwhelmed in crowds. ”
2. How did your podcast come about?
“The three of us traveled for most of our 20s doing music, but we eventually got tired of being away from home and decided to settle down and start families. Josh initially had the idea of starting a podcast based around our experiences growing up in private schools.
We had a few interest meetings and decided that a podcast about “Florida Man” would not only be a lot of fun, but would provide us the opportunity to continue to create and interact with listeners on a wider level. “
3. What has been your favorite podcast you guys have done so far and why?
Josh: “Every episode presents a weird story about Florida and its history. Places like The Garden of Eden (Episode 12) existing in real life and in Florida blew me away. The origin story of the monkeys in Ocala (Episode 7) still doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Wayne: “There’s always going to be a special place in my heart for the spooky stuff. Episode 20, the little lighthouse of Horrors, still keeps me up at night. We were even invited to experience it ourselves after hours, which was really neat.”
Cameron: “I think my favorite episode was the story about the barefoot mailman, episode 22. It has to be the most difficult and most Floridian job anyone could ever have.”
4. What has been the weirdest Florida Men headline you read and why?
Wayne:” I’ve got to go with the headline about the prisoners clogging the toilets so they could communicate to each other through the sewage pipes. Brilliant.”
Josh: “Most recently a woman was found to have 41 turtles in her backpack and a baby alligator in her yoga pants. So I’d say that one.”
Cameron: “I think the craziest headline we’ve talked about was the mayor of Port Richey shooting at SWAT when they came to arrest him in his home. We then had a follow up story about the interim mayor being arrested two weeks later.”
5. Is there any exciting news, events etc you would like to share?
“Recently we received a report from our publisher that showed that we not only had subscribers in every state but also hundreds of subscribers internationally. It honestly blows our minds that anyone would even listen to the show, much less folks from outside of Florida. We’re honored for the support and will continue to make content as long as people continue to listen!”

Goosebumps books: A little reader’s journey.
I had a huge obsession with reading anything scary or super fantasy like. I read the Scary Stories to tell in the dark trilogy so much the previous year that I wore out the books. So when I felt like I got enough use of the those book my little mind was trying to find something else that brought the scare factor to my world.
One day in my class the teacher was passing out the Scholastic Arrow book club ads before we were done for that day.
I never really look through those ads but I saw a book cover that caught my eye:
I was like whoa this looks interesting, creepy and scary I definitely want to read this! So when I went home that day I told my mom that I wanted to get a couple of books from the ad I bought home. My mom is the kind of person who never really understood my interests but she hardly questioned them. I guess she was just so excited I wanted to read because I hardly read at home. I mostly read at recess because I wasn’t really one to partake in activities. So then next day at school I was armed with my receipt of things I wanted to order and a check from my mom and happily forked over both items to the teacher.
AND THEN I FORGOT ABOUT THE BOOKS. Because I remember I finally got them and it took such a long time in my kid brain for my order to arrive. (Which upon reflection probably took 5-10 business days).
I saw pile of books on my desk and found “The Haunted Mask” in the middle of the pile. And anxiously waited for the teacher to say it was time for recess so I can run out and start reading this book!
So when recess finally was announced I tore open the book and I even did not leave the classroom! I spent the whole time at my desk reading this book! I remember enjoying the book so much that I continued to read it on my way home on the bus till the early evening hours of that day. I thought it was one of the coolest books I ever read and I beg my mom if we could go to the bookstore super soon to get more books. So began my book obsession with R.L. Stine books! And read all of the Goosebumps books that were out at the point. Some of my favorite Goosebumps books were:
Every time the teacher would hand out the Scholastic Books leaflet I would always order the newest Goosebumps book. I EVEN BOUGHT GOOSEBUMPS POGS!!!
My book obsession started to dwindle when I would get one of the books and finish it under an hour. I wanted more but always had to wait until a new book was release. But at the point I wanted to be scared and challenged. So that is when I found out about R.L. Stine’s other series:
But I’ll write about that book obsession for another entry!
What made these books worth reading for me is that when I was in kindergarten I HATED to read. The nuns would constantly talk to my mom about how unmotivated I was to learn how to read. But I felt like it was not that I was unmotivated or did not want to read. It was that the books that I was having to read from were never interesting to me. The content felt boring and I was always the kid who wanted to know about scary stuff like monsters, ghosts and folklore. So when I found these books not only did it make me want to read but I found out that reading is enjoyable and fun!
